Types of Kicks In Rugby

Rugby Skill Rubrics
Catch / Pass
- Outside foot up to stay square and straight
- Hands out towards pass
- Fingers up
- Elbows bent to absorb impact (soft elbows)
- Catch ball early
- Bring across body at above hip height “across the table” in fluid motion
- Keep hips and shoulders square
- Turn head towards receiver
- Release firm pass with wrist flick
- Fingers finish pointed toward receiver

Pass Extension Drill #1
- Performed on knees
- Ball tucked under one hip on side
- Power / force / spin hand wrapped around ball at the back of the ball
- Other hand guiding ball
- Pass ball straight out in front to partner
- Use torso to generate more power in pass

Pass Extension Drill #2
- Same as above, on knees, except one-handed
- Pass goes across body from one side to the other
- Power hand only grips ball on hip
- Power hand only rips pass across the table with spin motion
- Repeat with partner
Tackle
- Tackler aims for inside shoulder of ball carrier
- Maintain balance
- Weight forward on feet to change direction
- Defender takes the space and get in tight
- Pick a target area
- Hit, stick, squeeze and leg drive after contact
- Regain feet to play the ball
